Asia: Nepal

The location of our first dental clinic when we began our work in 2001, Nepal, has only a few hundred dentists to serve a population of 28 million. Our journey to South Asia and one of the poorest countries in the world, begins in the bustling capital city of Kathmandu where we set-up a mobile dental clinic at our local host school, Shree Mangal Dvip.

The clinic is a five-minute walk to Boudhnath Stupa – a UNESCO World Heritage and Buddhist religious site. In partnership with Shree Mangil Dvip and assisted by local Nepali teenagers, we operate out of a large classroom and serve children from charity schools, orphanages, and remote mountain areas.

Days off from the clinic are spent visiting the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley and taking in the local Tibetan and Nepali culture.

Volunteers can choose one of two optional sightseeing itineraries to cap the clinic experience:

Optional Everest Hike

After a rich and fulfilling week working in Kathmandu, volunteers board what is said to be the most exciting and adrenaline provoking flight on earth – to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest trail. The next week is spent trekking through delightful Sherpa villages and soaking up the vibrant colors, sites and sounds of village life. This trek takes you to Khumjung at 13,500ft  – where you will see amazing views of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam and surrounding peaks.

Optional Jungle Safari

Following a week of working in the clinic in Kathmandu, volunteers board a domestic flight to Baratpur in the Nepali lowlands. They then travel overland to the Chitwan Jungle National Park, where they will spend the next two days embarking on safaris at sunrise and sunset, spotting wildlife including rhinoceros and tigers; learning about and bathing elephants; and exploring the majestic surroundings on foot.
